Today we will show you why a domain name is so  important and what you need to look for in a  website hosting service.

DOMAIN NAMES

If you are establishing a website for your business, we cannot stress strongly enough how important your own domain name is.

If you are on the web to stay, it is essential to have your own domain name for a number of reasons.

1) How many websites do you look at that have a URL (web address) like this:

http://www.somefreehost.com/members/yourname/index.htm

Visitors will take you more seriously if you have a URL such as http://www.yourdomain.com.

2) Promotion – if you spend hours and hours promoting your site and you get listed in the search engines top 20 and suddenly for some reason, your free service provider decides to change the way they host their members, all your work might be in vain. Or maybe you will be dissatisfied with one hosting service and want to change. If you don’t have your own domain name you will have to start all your promotion efforts right from square one!

3) You will not be happy about pouring investment into a website (time is a big investment) until you know you have a domain name that you are in control of.

Therefore I would strongly advise you to get your own domain name before you do any promotion. If not, you must be prepared to stick with the URL you already have because all the promoting you will be doing in the coming few months will be based on promoting this URL.

Imagine if you get a high ranking with a free domain name and then the free host goes out of business or they decide to rearrange their members on a different directory. When someone searches for your original free domain name they will get a “Page Not Found” message.
Just imagine all the sales you could lose !

Tips for choosing a domain name:

a) Try to find a catchy name that people will remember.

b) A domain name with a keyword in it can improve your ranking on some search engines – for example http://www.discount-shoes.com if you are selling shoes.
(Note the hyphen is needed for the search engine to recognize this as two different words).

c) Once you have an easy to remember domain name, you can register more domain names which will point to your primary website – if you do not have keywords in your primary domain name and you want to improve your search engine ranking.
A few years ago, the INTERNIC allowed domains with 67 letters in them whereas previously only 23 letters were allowed.

Register your domain now before someone else gets it!

Try to get a .com domain name. When someone has to remember your URL, they normally first think of using a com extension when typing it in the browser.
